Generic models trained on the open internet don’t understand the nuances of your customers, your contracts, or your product catalog. That’s your edge.
But if your strategy involves blindly dumping data into third-party tools, you’re handing over that edge.
What to do instead:

Avoid the trap of building a centralised “AI center of excellence” that never ships. Instead, embed AI talent in domain teams. Encourage shadow AI projects, as long as they follow governance standards.

4. Design for a multi-model future
It’s not just GPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini.
Soon, you’ll need strategies that blend models: small ones for edge cases, foundation models for deep tasks, and fine tuned ones for internal knowledge.
You’ll need:
- Cost control tools. Monitor token usage obsessively.
- Quality benchmarking systems. Run blind evals across models.
- Smart orchestration. Automatically route tasks to the right model for the job.
This might sound like overkill now. It won’t in six months.
5. Don’t let fear stall you, but protect the core
There’s a tension every enterprise feels right now. Move too fast, and you risk a security breach or reputational damage. Move too slow, and your competitors eat your lunch.
So move carefully, but move.
A good mental model: treat generative AI like cloud adoption in 2008. Start small. Use sandboxed environments. Put clear usage policies in place. Don’t let “perfect” stop you from shipping pilots.
And never put sensitive data into blackbox APIs without contractual and technical safeguards.
